- A. CD-ROM caching
- =================
- To increase the speed of your program, you should use
- SMARTDRV.EXE's CD-ROM caching. This option is available in
- DOS 6.2 and higher.
-
- To enable CD-ROM caching:
- -------------------------
- 1. In your "AUTOEXEC.BAT" file, Make sure that the CD-ROM
- extensions program, CorelCDX or MSCDEX, is loaded before
- SMARTDRV. For example:
- .
- C:\BIN\MSCDEX.EXE /D:MSCD001 /M:10
- .
- C:\WINDOWS\SMARTDRV.EXE /X /L 2048
- .
-
- 2. Give SMARTDRV.EXE the default cache size of 2048K as shown
- in the example above.
-
-
-
- B. Improving Performance
- ========================
-
- If you notice that your Corel Medical disk is running slowly,
- setting your video driver to 256 color mode may improve
- performance. For further information on setting color mode,
- see the documentation provided by your video card
- manufacturer.
-
-
-
- C. Trouble Shooting
- ===================
-
- 1. Text cut off in some dialog boxes
- ------------------------------------
- The Large Fonts settings in some video drivers are not
- supported and can cause text to overrun the boundaries of
- dialog boxes, or can cause the main application window to
- appear too large. To avoid this problem, please disable
- Large Fonts and restart the Corel Medical title. For
- further information on disabling large fonts, see the
- documentation provided by your video card manufacturer.
- If you still have problems, please see also the next
- section below regarding the installation of the TIMES
- NEW ROMAN font.
-
- 2. Print output doesn't look correct
- ------------------------------------
- If you see strange characters when you print from this
- Corel Medical title, check that the TIMES NEW ROMAN and
- ARIAL fonts (windows defaults) are installed on your system.
- For information on installing fonts, see the documentation
- provided with Windows.
-
- 3. Clipboard objects cleared when Stedmans or Quicktime
- movies are launched
- ------------------------------------------------------
- Please note that when the Stedmans Medical Dictionary is
- launched or a QuickTime 'movie in a window' is opened,
- the clipboard contents are cleared. If you have items
- stored on the clipboard for use in other applications,
- please be sure to save them before starting Cancer.
-
- 4. System appears frozen when a text hyperlink is clicked
- ---------------------------------------------------------
- Please note that when a hyperlink (red text) is clicked on,
- a complex search is started and your system may appear
- frozen momentarily. Please do not reset the system, but
- rather simply give the computer a little time to work and
- display the search results on screen. Note that some of the
- more complex links can take up to twenty seconds to display,
- and during this time there is no indication on screen that
- the system is "thinking".
-
- 5. "Cannot display entry" error when using Stedmans
- ---------------------------------------------------
- Please note that in order for Stedmans Medical Dictionary
- to function properly, you must have a printer driver
- installed on your system. If you do not have a printer
- driver installed, you may get an error indicating that an
- entry cannot be displayed. To avoid this problem, please be
- sure that your system has a properly installed Windows
- print driver. Note that you do not need a physical printer
- attached to your system, only a printer driver is required.
- For further information please consult your Windows
- documentation or online help.
-
- 6. System freezes when using Autorun
- ------------------------------------
- Under certain hardware/system configurations, use of the
- Windows 95 Autorun feature may cause the system to stop
- responding at the startup of this Medical title. If this
- occurs, restart your system and either disable the Autorun
- feature, or simply click the exit button when the Autorun
- screen appears. You may then use the normal start menu
- icon for Cancer to launch the product.
-
- 7. Quicktime videos get choppy and/or sound speeds up
- -----------------------------------------------------
- On certain hardware/system configurations, users that have
- older 8bit sound cards and drivers may experience a problem
- while playing the Quicktime videos contained in this
- product. There have been cases where the videos may start
- to get choppy while playing, and/or the sound in the movie
- may appear to speed up. This problem usually occurs after
- working with the product for a lengthy period of time, or
- if the videos are replayed frequently. If this issue
- becomes a problem, simply restart the Medical Title and/or
- Windows and the problem should be temporarily corrected.
-
- 8. Steadmans may not display properly when accessed
- ----------------------------------------------------
- Under certain conditions, if the Steadmans Medical dictionary
- is accessed multiple times by closing it completely and
- reopening it in the same session, an error may occur in your
- application. If this occurs, simply refrain from closing
- Steadmans Medical Dictionary, simply leave it running in the
- background after using it, and it therefore will be accessible
- whenever you need it without having to reopen it each time.
-
-
-
